Raised in Billings, Montana, where the mountains meet the fringe of the Great Plains, Natalie grew up a small part of the wild and windy natural world. After high school graduation, she completed a year-long foreign exchange to Ecuador and Spain, later earning biology and Spanish degrees from Willamette University in Oregon, studying humpback whales in Alaska, and piloting studies for UCLA’s Neurology Department. Her scientific projects have been published in General and Comparative Endocrinology, Marine Ecology Progress Series, and the Journal of Neuroscience.
These intense experiences in both the field and lab fueled her passion for quality science communication, and in the winter of 2017, she graduated from the Johns Hopkins Master’s Program in Science Writing. Natalie currently lives in San Diego, California, where she freelances, provides fact-checking for WNYC’s Radiolab, and serves as Science Editor and author of the column Field Notes for Orion magazine.
Natalie is a member of the National Association of Science Writers, the San Diego Science Writers Association, the Society of Environmental Journalists, and Investigative Reporters & Editors.
